General

[edit]

Hi. I am Timwi. As somebody with a desire to create, I joined Wikipedia in 2003 and became an avid writer, editor and helper. Unfortunately, with Wikipedia now controlled by the rampant deletionists since the 2010s who seek to erase and destroy other people’s hard work and valuable information, I am no longer welcome on Wikipedia and have consequently no longer participated since. Literally everybody I know is either distraught and frustrated by having to fight just to keep valuable contributions, or doesn’t even bother because “it all gets deleted anyway”.

The destructive consequences of this have been summarized by Gwern in their article, In Defense of Inclusionism more eloquently than I ever could. I highly recommend this to any currently active Wikipedians, especially those who are actively going around to delete everything they can like they’re on a mission to cleanse the planet of information.

Wikipedia will never be healthy or useful until this issue is fundamentally addressed.

Examples

[edit]

Reality: We Didn't Start the Fire contains a number of references to historical events, most of which have Wikipedia articles.
Reasonable person: A self-respecting encyclopedia would list them and link to their articles.
Wikipedia: Let’s ban having such a list and as an excuse let’s call it “Original Research” even though it’s obviously neither original nor research.

Reality: Cary Huang is a prolific YouTuber and famous for multiple impactful creations.
Reasonable person: A self-respecting encyclopedia would include an article on him with a full list of his creations that have achieved fame.
Wikipedia: Let’s ban this person from being listed, pretend only one of his creations exist, and as an excuse let’s call it “Notability” even though he and his other creations are clearly and obviously more notable.

Reality: Truro Cathedral has 4 spires. Wikipedia incorrectly stated it had 3. Someone took photos from multiple angles that clearly show it has 4.
Reasonable person: A self-respecting encyclopedia would fix its mistake and include (some of) the photos to back up its information.
Wikipedia: Let’s change it back, link to shady sources that claim it has 3 and call them “reliable sources” even though they clearly aren’t, and pretend the photos don’t exist. Let’s also muddle the wording so that nobody can really tell what it’s claiming anymore.
